Hold My Chewie

Emme has developed this preference of having someone hold a chewie for her to chew on. I don't know what the attraction is, but she likes to have someone hold a bone or other chewie while she gnaws on it. She seems to like it held above the floor level, so maybe it has to do with positioning it so it is easier for her to chew on. This just another mystery that Emme knows about and about which we have no clue.

It's more interesting to have a person holding the chew - you can move it, she can look at you, there's an interaction between you and the dog. A toy is nice, but it's much nicer when it moves and is attached to the hand of her favorite moving thing (YOU!). In this case, with a chew, there's a little tug of war going on (albeit very sedate, if you're just holding it) - and she's winning - you're giving the chew, you're giving - that's key - by holding. A lot of simple psychology going on. It's all about the human touch and interaction. : ))) Also in the wild, when they feast on a kill, more than one dog may be eating off of a carcass - pulling at different parts. This holding and giving of the chew toy to the animal is a way of simulating that feeling of something chewable between the dog and another pack member.
